Hi there, I’m Karen, a music teacher based in Nelson. I offer piano and guitar tuition for all ages, designing lessons to fit with your personality and ability.
Learn different genres like reggae, blues, folk, country, rock, contemporary. In addition to one-to-one lessons, I also teach guitar groups for over 55’s.

About Karen
Music has been a part of my life since I can remember. I learnt Guitar in my teens and then onto Piano in my twenties.
While raising a family I continued to study music and began teaching at this time. I studied Classical Piano grades 1-7 Royal School of Music piano exams and grades 1-5 theory.
I taught Piano and Keyboard at Broadgreen Intermediate for 20 years. Also, I have taught Piano and Guitar at Hampden Street School. I have been teaching privately for 25 years.
Piano/Keyboard Lessons
I teach piano/keyboard to all ages. Designing lessons to fit with your personality and ability. If there is a particular song you want to learn, we can do that.
If you want a general understanding of music, be able to play easy songs you can learn at your own pace, I can help with that.
If you are seriously wanting to understand all aspects of music, exams are the way to go. We can combine learning songs you want to learn as well as study for exams.
Guitar Lessons
Guitar is such a cool instrument. Strumming or finger-picking or playing different melodies to make your guitar sing.
I offer lessons for beginner to intermediate level, teaching guitar songs that you want to learn.
OVER 55 GUITAR GROUP
Such a fun way to learn guitar is in a group. Learning the songs you want to learn but playing together, like in a band. You can be part of a 3-person group, learning songs you want and performing them together. Fun!
Group lessons are Wednesdays 2-3pm or 5-6 pm
Music Theory Lessons
Learning theory alongside your chosen instrument will help cement your knowledge of music.
While theory is not a compulsory requirement for lessons, I recommend some basic theory with lessons.
If you are wanting to sit Theory Exams, I can help with that. I can prepare students for exams using the Royal School of Music and Trinity School of Music syllabus.
Cost
Lessons cost $30 for a half hour lesson during school term

Lessons take place at my home music studio in Nelson.
